Flea Market Scene::Amcorp Mall |
|
|
The second installment of our on-going flea market/consumer
whore series features everybody's favourite hang-out... Amcorp
Mall! A unique cross between a mall and a street market,
it's got lots to offer, including plenty of well-priced vinyl.
Every
weekend, dozens of stall-holders descend on Amcorp Mall to
flog their antique houseware, vintage comics, ancient
bric-a-brac and of course, dusty vinyl.
The
Weekend Flea Market at Amcorp Mall houses a pleasant mix of
genuine collectors items and casual browsing material.
Likewise, the crowd consists of hardcore vinyl-hunters and
bug-eyed collectors as well as lazy Sunday afternoon shoppers.
Most
of the good stuff is sold in the basement, and this is also
where you will find stacks of second-hand vinyl for sale.
|
A
quick check of the stock revealed a majority of 70's and 80's
stuff with an inordinate amount of James Last LPs, for some
reason. The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack is also a popular
item, along with evergreens Teresa Teng and P. Ramlee.
Classical pieces can also be found in abundance, nestled
next to scores of Latin and Hawaiian-themed compilations.
Sukumaran's
stall, at the pillar right in front of Tops Supermarket,
stocks a wide range of vinyl, from latin dance music to
hair-band rock. They also sell cheap used books. Alvin
Toffler's Future Shock was available for RM 2!
For
rarer finds, Joe's MAC (Music, Art and Collectibles) is a good
bet. His stall might be easily overlooked, tucked in a
corner right next to the escalator, but his colourful headgear
just screams for attention!
Some gems unearthed from his crates were Herbie Hancock's
electro-jazz fusion album, Monster, for RM 29, Afrika Bambaata
and James Brown's collaboration, Unity, for RM 15, and Sergio
Mendes LPs for RM 20. He also has plenty of rock (Bowie, the
Stones) and Malay pop for sale. Joe gets new stock all the
time, and he has lots more at home, so ask him or his daughter
if you can't find what you're looking for.

While excellent bargains can be found here, not all the
records on sale are cheap. Albums like the Superman
soundtrack, Nirvana's 1992 genre-buster, Nevermind, and a host
of other, more 'popular' LPs have prices upwards of RM 50
slapped on them. Despite the seemingly high price, they are
still relatively cheap when compared to prices in major vinyl
markets like London and New York.
The
Amcorp Flea Market is a great place to spend a Sunday
afternoon, especially for marketers who want all the
conveniences of a shopping centre built-in.
Opening Hours:
Saturdays:
12pm - 6pm
Sundays: 9am - 6pm
Amcorp Mall is next to the Taman Jaya LRT
Station.
