»Chris Lum Q&A
Chris Lum is one of the leading tastemakers of the San Francisco house scene, having worked in all areas of the music industry - be it behind the counter of BPM Music Factory, SF's first dance record store, or producing with partner Jay-J at Moulton Studios, putting out records on Moulton Studios Recordings, Multitracked and releases on Tango, Siesta and NRK.

We asked him some questions about his Grammy(tm) nomination for 'Best Remixed Recording (non-classical)' for the house reworking of Jill Scott's "He Loves Me Again", which he and Jay-J did under the moniker 'Your Friends From San Francisco' and other things as well... mostly about his desire not to suck, as he put it.

How does it feel to be nominated for a Grammy in the remixed record category for your work with Jay-J on "He Loves Me"?

Chris Lum: It's sounds cliché' but it really is a huge honour. For me, just the nomination is enough. It's nice to know that I could possibly be wrong in my opinion of the music industry. It's also nice to see a great song (written by Jill Scott) to be in the finals. She is truly amazing.

Could you tell us why your name sounds Chinese?

CL: Yes I could. You should ask me sometime and I'll tell you. Really though...I'm almost half Chinese. My mom is Chinese and my dads a goat. By my math it works out to be about half Cantonese half Goat. Really though, I am.

What were your main goals when you first started producing?

CL: (1) to not SUCK (2) to be able to do this until I die and (3) make some cash.

How long have you been DJing/producing? Do you still see yourself doing this 10 years from now?

CL: DJ for 12 years. Producing for 6 years. I fully intend to remain here, with a death grip on my keyboard forever...except when I have to go pee of course. Then, I let go of the death grip.

Give us a rundown on who inspired you early in your career.

CL: Doc Martin, Wayne Gardiner, Chicago and the Smurfs ( an American cartoon). Listen to Roots by me and Jay-J and you will hear the names of everyone that inspired me back in them old time days.

Was DJing ever one of your childhood ambitions? If not, what were they?

CL: No not really. As a boy I'd often dream of owning a goat farm. Goat herding I think it's called but that was more of a unrealistic day dream I suppose. When I got serious about my goals in life, I realised that i wanted to do just three things.
(1) to not SUCK
(2) to be able to do this until I die and
(3) make some cash.

What are your main goals in life? Do you think you've achieved these goals?

CL: (1) to not SUCK (2) to be able to do this until I die and (3) make some cash. Achieved? Well...no.

What are your views on the house scene these days? Do you think it still has the kick it had 3 years ago?

CL: Not really any different that I can see in the last 5 years really. I have been encouraged lately by the number of 18-22 year olds I meet that like proper house music. Not cheesy commercial crap or
trance and stuff. That is a good sign to me. I hope it means that younger people will find softer and deeper music exciting.

Do you think that the Grammy nomination is a sign that greater things are in store for you?

CL: Won't know until the end of the year I suppose. I try not to speculate on such things. The last time I speculated on something, I ended up losing my kidney in a poker game. Learned my lesson the second time though I'll tell ya.

If you won the Grammy, what would your acceptance speech be like?

CL: PROPERLLY SPANGLED

Are you working on anything new lately? If so, when can we expect it out?
