Elevation Special::Interview with Faze Action! |
|
|
The Faze Action gang were accosted just after they got off
the stage at the Elevation gig in Genting. We questioned the
trio, consisting of be-dreaded vocalist, Zeke Manyika, and
brotha's Robin and Simon Lee (yes, they really are
brothers!)...
Faze Action are signed on the very respected nuphonic
label, which has released cuts from Justin Robertson, David
Mancuso and Maurice Fulton, featuring high-end chill-out tunes
with jazz and disco underpinnings.
so how was the gig?
Z:We enjoyed it very much. I think the crowd is beautiful...
heh heh heh. (his laugh didn't sound that sinister in real
life, honest!)
R:We love Asia, great audience. This is out first Asian
gig... well we've actually played individually across Asia,
but as Faze Action this is our first.
what's Faze Action Live all about?
R:Faze Action is all about Simon's DJing. Basically what we
do is we try and emulate the style of Simon's DJing live...
and we write our own material around his DJing.
We're based in London, actually.

|
do you listen to alot of West London broken beat then?
R:We listen to very mixed stuff too, but oh yes, we do, yea
(listen to West London stuff)
what are your favourite record stores in London?
S:Vinyl Junkies, Flying Records. They're all based in Berwick
Street and Dean Street in Soho so they're all within walking
distance of each other.
who are your influences?
S:When we write new music we listen to alot of old music as
well. So we listen to like, everyone from Pat Mancini, like
jazz, african music like Fela Kuti, latin music, you know,
Bebel Gilberto,
R:Sergio Mendes...
S:Yea, that's quite alot of artists.
|
|
do you have a regular gig in London?
S:DJing, we do something once a month, me and Robin DJ.
It's a place called Bridge and Tunnel, it's the Nuphonic Bar,
the first Wednesday of every month. We kind of relax, get
together…
R:good sound system!
S:yup, good sound system and great music you know.
anything else you'd like to add?
R:we love it, we love Malaysia and we wanna come back!
the three gentlemen then traipse away, as suddenly as
they had appeared...

Highlands, Aug 24 2002.
