Elevation Special::Interview with Jungle Jerry |
|
|
Probably one of the most recognisable figures in the
Malaysian club scene, Jungle Jerry has been tearing up dance
floors since way back when. We talked to him about Elements,
Movement, the tobacco ban and his current projects...
alright... whats the deal with Elements' closure?
It's going through a renovation period it's going to open
up soon.
are the rumours true that (now-defunct club) Movement
will be taking over?
the guys are... so its going to be a joint-venture with
Elements and Movement.
what other projects are you involved with right now?
I'm doing one with Rabbit, the Malaysian electronica
artist. We just finished our first track, which is number one
in the Malaysian charts right now, and we're working on more
tracks right now.
what happened to the Piring Hitam project?
The Piring Hitam compilation is put on hold, all the tracks
are done and we're just waiting for the right time to actually
launch it, so we just keep it on hold.

what do think about the tobacco sponsorship ban which will
begin next year?
It's good, because when we started, we never depended on
them. Now, almost everyone is dependant on them. We need a
cycle, to keep it alive.
are we still going to have big gigs?
It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter if we have big gigs or
not. As long as you have the dance culture going on, if you
have the underground scene, the independent scene and the
sponsors scene, you have a balance of all three, you will go a
long way. If you depend on only one you burn out very fast.
what residencies are you holding currently?
Right now I'm not concentrating alot on residencies because
I'm working on my album, I got no time for residencies.
when's your album out?
Probably end of the year.
what will we expect to hear on that?
A bit of everything. You can hear breaks, house, techno...
it's going to be what Malaysians like.
|
|
you played a very breaky set tonight...
Yeah, because I wasn't supposed to play so early, I was
supposed to play later... so I just play what is according to
the people... so I just played breaks.
a little history... how did you get into the club scene?
It's a passion... the same way you're holding a recorder
and talking to me now... somehow deep inside when you're young
you want to do something like this. Likewise.
what was the first club you DJed at?
Fire Disco.
how was it back then?
Different. It's like a revolution, it evolved from
one to another. So, same goes for every category of music,
lifestyle, everything... club culture has moved on to the
standard right now.
what's the future of the scene in Malaysia?
it's hard to say because with KL, the whole club culture...
is really healthy. There is alot of potential here.
|
|
what do you think of the scene in Singapore at the moment?
Singapore...see, Asia, goes through a phase... the amount
of exposure you get, the amount of burn-out phase you go
through. It's all about balance.
what have your overseas experiences been like?
I played in Germany, Hong Kong and a few other places...
(in Germany) I played at The Casino... yea I played on Paul
Van Dyk's birthday.
The whole reason... every DJ from Malaysia goes abroad to
play.. is to bring the name, that so far, KL can do it
as well as anybody else. That's the whole focus, that's the
whole point.
fave tunes right now?
My number one track is Patrick Turner right now, but always
a bit of percussion, tribal, breakbeat.
anything else to add?
To all the clubbers, the pre-clubbers, the
wannabe-clubbers, for everyone... get your product information
before you do something! Do not be a poseur!
