»How To Break A World Record
Dec 25 2003
Malaysian DJ, Maverick, will attempt to break the world record for the longest DJ set this weekend. More than 80 hours and five minutes of nonstop mixing brings a new meaning to the 'megamix'. This veteran DJ has played everywhere from feng tau clubs to TwelveSI since starting his career 18 years ago. Born Teh Eng Keong in Penang, Maverick keeps busy these days with his Techcircuit residency by night and running a popular mixed rice stall in Plaza Damansara by day. The sober entrepreneur lets us in on how he's been preparing for this superhuman endurance test.

1. Be Persistent
Abusing your body for days on end behind the decks might not be everyone's cup of tea, but working at it even if others are less than supportive is the only way forward for Maverick. "The bottomline is, it doesn't matter if I have sponsors or if I have to sacrifice my business for a few days, the show must go on" Maverick says.

2. Liquid Love
The punishing task of staying awake for 72 hours calls for some artificial boosters, but nothing as exotic as herbal brews or chemical enhancers for Maverick. "I'll just drink plenty of water and coffee" he says. "It keeps a balance."

3. Up All Night
72 hours nonstop behind the decks might seem like a ridiculous display of stamina, but Maverick brushes off the physical challenge quickly. "It's more mental than physical," he says. "But I have been meditating alot, I practise breathing techniques to clear my mind and to visualise myself playing on the decks." Besides, he confides, The Guiness Book of World Records hasn't disqualified the use of chairs during the marathon.

4. Damming The Waters
All well and good, but some physical challenges just can't wait. What about the call of nature? With all that coffee and water hydrating running through his body, there's got to be some major flood control going on? Not so, Maverick maintains. "Toilet breaks are actually allowed throughout the set, and anyway, I'm used to it because I played six hour sets all the time," he says, before admitting that in an emergency, he wouldn't have any qualms about fertilising surrounding shrubs.

5. The Big Payoff
What does one do after breaking the world record for the longest DJ mix ever? Maverick supplies the only sensible answer: "I'm going to sleep after I'm done!"
