»Andrew Lum - Matter Of Time
May 27 2003

out on New Asia Records

New age, ethnic, world music, spiritual, fusion, smooth, relaxed, classy, chilled, lush … these are just a few word to describe ‘Matter of Time’ produced and arranged by Andrew Lum. Taking almost two years to release this long awaited album, aptly titled ‘Matter of Time’, it was indeed a matter of time…

Having worked with numerous artist like Mohar (Malaysia), Sara T (China) and many others on this album, it was no wonder there were so many Asian traditional instruments infused with jazz flavours and the new age classical pop sound. From sitars to the Javanese Seruling, ‘Matter of Time’ is unique and set to be a timeless album.

Kicking off with ‘In The Beginning’, which features John Kaizan Neptune on the Japanese Shakuachi and V. Selvaganesh on the Ganjira, it sets the atmosphere for most of this album.

One particular track that caught my attention was ‘Poison’, featuring Jessica (China/Singapore) on the ‘sanxian’. It has this Chinese ‘sanxian’ solo that stands out over the wonderful fusion of jazz. ‘Anticipation’ was another groove that has the guitars giving the jazz riffs with the good ol’ wah wah strumming and the ‘sanxian’ on the solo once again. Backing up this track is the array of tablas & ‘darbuka’, tambourines and the ‘ganjra’. I suppose it my personal liking for the ‘sanxian’ that keeps me drawn to the sound.

Closing off the CD is ‘Back In September’, the Soul Remix and the NYC Jungle Mix. The Soul remix as the name describes, is one with a good groove and the ‘chilled out dope beats’ with the strings and dubby vocals of V. Selvaganesh. As for the NYC Jungle Mix, its drum and bass infused beats with the ethnic instruments of the ‘erhu’ by Sara T (China) and YZ (China) on the ‘yz’. Warm oriental drum and bass would be the way to describe it. In other words, LTJ Bukem Asian style!!

‘Matter of Time’ is definitely the CD to listen to in the car, the café, the studio, at work and at home.
