»Bedrock Breaks mixed by DJ Hyper

‘Bedrock Breaks: DJ Hyper’ is the first breakbeat release by London-based label Bedrock, featuring a diverse breaks mix by DJ Hyper taking listeners from nu-skool to big beat and funky.

Bedrock is the London club night and record label owned by Mr. “number one DJ in the world” himself, John Digweed and John Muir. Confusingly, it is also the name of the Muir/Digweed production outfit, responsible for prog house hits like ‘Heaven Scent’ and a remix of New Order’s Crystal.

Now to the CD...mixed by breakbeat pioneer DJ Hyper AKA Guy Hatfield, you know it’s going to be quality stuff. The man came to prominence with the Y3K mixed CD series on the venerable Distinctive label, home to Hybrid and Way Out West, but has since left to start up his own label, Kilowatt.

Bedrock Breaks is a two CD set titled “Heads Down” and “Late Night/Early Doors”. As the title suggests, disc one represents the big room sound. It opens up nicely with dark basslines and gradually moves on to big beat-territory with Fatboy Slim’s ‘Retox.’ The middle of the disc builds up with Puretone-’Addicted to Bass’ (Hyper & Rhymes remix) to a darker sound. Koma & Bones-‘American Thief’ is somewhat monotonous but makes for a great intro to the oh so dark Plump DJs remix of Brother Love Dubs-‘The mighty ming’.

Disc two is the more excellent one and it slides off with Dangerous Frontiers’  ‘The City’, a great chilled out track with a sprinkling of warbling synths. Track three is the supremely uplifting/proggy/mellow Dave London remix of Trinity Hi-fi’s ‘Turn the lights down’. PMT makes an appearance with his remix of ‘I Wish You Were Here’ Creamer and K which is also quite tongue-rollingly good. The Plumps again create all kinds of chaos with BT’s ‘Smartbomb’, leaving a sickly residue of happiness for everyone.

In all, Bedrock Breaks is an above average offering, with tight mixing and nice selection and programming. All the big names are there, Koma & Bones, Rennie Pilgrem, Plump Djs, Tipper plus a fair selection of Hyper’s own remixes. This would have been an excellent compilation if there was only one disc.
