Just when you thought breakbeat has found a home in
Kuala Lumpur, it's out on the streets again. It's
unlikely abode, Bilique, a bistro and bar in Bangsar,
will be seeing a change in management in the near
future, and it's uncertain whether there will be
another Breaks and Bass instalment there - for
awhile at least.

Breaks and Bass 5 saw the usual collection of drum n
bass and breaks DJs playing out tunes from their
niche genres, but there was, perhaps, a tinge of
sadness in the frenetic beats and dancing, as
punters and DJs alike bade farewell to their
Saturday night home.
Beatmonkeys Eush and Johan warmed up the night as
usual, with a collection of breakbeat across the
board, from nu skool to funky and the
electro-inspired Florida sound. There was also a
rare appearance by Michael Jackson during Eush's set
- in the form of Bushwhacka's (of Layo & Bushwhacka!
fame) bootleg of 'Billie Jean', a record that was
firing up dancefloors across the globe as recently
as last summer.

Loops Collective's Mac and Siv jacked up the beats
with a thorough drum n bass rinse out. The 'heads
were having a blast on the dancefloor as they tore
it up to the classics, including Shy Fx and
T-Power's 'Shake Your Body'. The turnout on the
night was laudable, maybe because it was a send-off
party of sorts, but in view of the hugely-hyped
Elevation party in Genting on the same night, it was
surely a good-sized crowd.
Bilique has been the site of many memorable parties
of the breakbeat kind in the past few months, from
Botchit and Scarper's SOTO to the educated mayhem of
Krafty Kuts and Atomic Hooligan's mad skillz. Let's
hope the momentum Beatmonkey and Loops have built up
won't dissipate with a new venue.
