Mutiny nights are always interesting affairs. The
last one at Viva (if memory serves correctly) was
Melbourne breaks guru, Heath Myers of Kinetik
Records. In addition to the unconventional music
policy, there was a clothes stall outside the club
selling what appeared to be goa and psy-trance
inspired outfits, obviously meant for those who want
to commune with the cosmos through dance music.
Inside, Viva's usually drab interior was livened up
by custom-made decorations, including cut-outs
hanging from the ceiling with a tribal motif. There
was also the addition of the 'Mutiny Lounge', a VIP
area for selected cool cats to hang out in. Although
not everyone enjoys this type of thing, it was more
in the spirit of encouraging individuality rather
than rewarding fat cats or bottle drinkers.
The latest edition of Mutiny saw another Melbourne
native on the decks, this time it was Disko Pussy.
Apparently, her stage name was a little too risqué
for us conservative Malaysians, so she played as
Daisy Darvall (incidentally, her real name) instead
of using her feline moniker. Her set was absolutely
spot-on, as she built up a good head of steam on the
usually sparse dancefloor with her funky techno
selections before banging it with tribal tracks and
a hint of the darker stuff. Operating on three
decks, Darvall definitely knew her way around the
console, as she expertly controlled the direction of
the set - and the punters helplessly getting down
on the dancefloor.

There was a good-sized crowd at Viva's on the
night, quite a feat, considering that last week's
Wednesday night party, Obsession, had its soulful
house tunes echoing to a barren dancefloor. Perhaps
this was due to Kent's tobacco-fueled muscle
sponsoring the Mutiny nights, although the promoters
Fuego evidently put in hard work to differentiate
the party from the rest of the weeknight pack.
Mutiny was definitely a night worth risking a late
Thursday morning for, if only because it's something
different in the cookie-cutter weeknight scene.
